Apartment Review
Worst apartment I've ever rented
Review Date: 10/1/2008 Reviewer: Anonymous
We moved in in December 2007. We only lived there until June 2008. Within that time, there were several break-ins, and car thefts. On one occasion my husband and I were walking our dogs and there was a gang of kids that required 11 police cars to keep them under control. When we needed maintenance, staff response was never prompt. I called the front office several times regarding a car alarm which was set to too high a sensitivity and went off nearly every night and it took 3 months for them to notify the owner. We only received one parking spot so we always had to find parking for another car which would often require that we walk past several lots to reach our apartment. The security is pathetic. I don't know why I didn't notice until after I moved in, but there are windows on either side of each of the doors to the apartments. They are 6 inches away from the lock so it would be extremely easy for someone to break in. The windows are also single-paned and offer very poor insulation. We had a mold problem in our bedroom which maintenance did nothing about. When maintenance was getting ready to do a job around the complex we received very short notice. For instance when the carports were all going to be repainted fliers were put out over the weekend to alert that work would begin monday. My husband and I had gone away for the weekend and we were lucky to have gotten back early enough to move the car because according to the flier any damage to the car would be at our expense for not moving it on time. All of what I have mentioned is trumped by the experience of moving out. We are members of the military. We needed to leave for our next station on June 25th. We wanted to schedule a move-out inspection while we were there and were told that it could only be performed once the keys were turned in. We needed to sleep there one last night since our plane would not depart until June 26th at 4 AM and were told that we would have to have the move-out inspection after we left and that we would have to turn in the key through the mail slot in the main office door. So, basically there is no way for a military member to be present for move-out inspections unless they are willing to pay to stay in a hotel instead of the apartment that they are still paying for, since our lease did not terminate until July 1st. According to our lease, we needed to have the carpet professionally cleaned otherwise we would be charged for professional cleaning. We hired B & B Carpet Care to clean the carpet the day before we left in order to make sure that the carpet was spotless. We paid for the heavy soil cleaning as an extra precaution and gave a copy of the receipt to Island Club management. We left the keys as instructed and left for Japan on the June 26th. Mid-August we finally receive the summary of charges to our deposit. We were charged $584.59 for carpet replacement. It does not say anything about replacement of the carpet in the lease and there was nothing wrong with the carpet when we left. A break down of that charge is 5 men at $11.03/hr. So, if that were the case it took 5 men 10 hours to replace the carpeting in two small rooms (our living room and bedroom). The entire apartment was only 576 square feet so the job could not have taken 5 men that long to complete. I have obtained a lawyer to help me against Island Club, but they won't even respond to him!
